The Munchies! package should contain the following files: Munchies 1.0.6, Music, Register Munchies, Registration Form, and READ ME.
System Requirements
Munchies should work on all Macs with System 7 and above. A monitor that can display 256 colors and 1700K of free RAM are recommended, but Munchies can run in as little as 800K in black and white at the smallest screen size with the music removed. Sound Manager 3.0 or better is recommend, but not required.

How to Play
Guide Melvin the Munchie using the mouse. Eat all the food to open the exit, and go through the exit to get to the next level. Eat the peapods to get pea shots which you can use to blow up the enemies. Fire with the mouse button. The salt gives you smart shots which you can guide by moving the mouse up and down. The pepper gives you power shots which plow though multiple objects. Eating the butter will surround Melvin with a coating of pure chloresterol rendering him temporarily invulnerable. the coffee gets an extra life. Scoring is as follows: all food except dessert and smart food:10 points, desserts: 50 points, enemies: 50 points, smart food: 100 points.
Options
You can change the music by putting a MOD file in the Munchies folder and renaming it "Music". Remove the old Music first if you want to save it. Large MODs may require you to to increase the memory by going to the Get Info box. The screen size cannot yet be changed on the fly; To see changes, you will need to quit and restart. Large screen sizes may also require you to increase the memory. The fast graphics option is the preferred one, but if you are having problems with the graphics, try unchecking it.
Note to ResEdit Hackers
Version 1.0.5 adds the ability to use Background files. Munchies can use any file that contains 16 ppat resources numbered consecutively starting at 128. You must name the file "Backgrounds" and put it in the same folder as the Munchies application. Large patterns will require you to increase the memory alloted to Munchies. Change the type and creator of the file to 'rsrc' and 'MikL' respectively to get the nice Munchies background icon. ResEdit newbies please read Appendix A: How to Change the Backgrounds .
The Munchies Contest
I could have a high score contest, but I thought of something better. What would a game be without a appropriate story? All registered users of Munchies are eligible. The winner will receive a cool Macintosh T-shirt and their story will be incorporated into a later version of Munchies. The top two runners-up will just get a T-shirt. Contest submissions must be receved by Jan 1, 1997. Stories will be posted on the Munchies! homepage.
Credits
Munchies! was written in THINK C using Ingemar Ragnemalm’s Sprite Animation Toolkit and Frank Seide’s Sound-Trecker MOD drivers. Food icons were mostly by Josh Cavalier. Backround patterns were by Ken Long, Lisa Melford, Trebor Kepone, Glenn Seamann, and Kevin Kosmicki. Additional patterns were by Geoff Adams and Stephen Krauth, the creators of Desktop Textures. I have tried to find the makers of all the patterns, but if I missed anyone please contact me and I will give proper credit or remove it from the game. Thanks to Jacob Cusack and Issac Church of the Shareware Review for advice and beta testing. Additional beta testing was done by Michael Kraus, Chris Willard, Tony Novelli and Jay Angevine (a.k.a. Mongo). Special thanks to my sons, Steven and David for Kiddie mode testing, and to my wife Chris for putting up with my expensive and time-consuming hobby.

Appendix A: How to Change the Backrounds
Until and if I ever get around to making a background editor, the easiest way to make your own backgrounds for Munchies! is with these two applications: Desktop Textures by Geoff Adams and Stephen Krauth and ResEdit by Apple Computer. Both should be easy to find on the commercial online services, the internet, or your local user group.
Step 1) Follow the instructions found in the Desktop Textures documentation to make a texture file with 16 different patterns. It is all right to have fewer or more than 16. If you have fewer, Munchies will load some of the default patterns. If you have more, you just won't see them. Alternatively, you can use an existing Desktop Texture File.
Step 2) Rename the texture file "Backgrounds". (Leave out the parenthesis, please!)
Step 3) Use ResEdit to open your the file. You should see a bluish textured square with "ppat" written underneath. Double-Click on the square to see the ppat resources. Select a ppat by clicking on it, and select "Get resource info" from the resource menu. Change the ID number to 128. Continue selecting and changing the ppat ID numbers for all 16 ppats until you have numbered all of them consecutively from 128 to 143. The ppat numbered 128 will be the background that appears with the title and high score screens.
Step 4)If you want the backgrounds file to "belong" to Munchies and display the Munchies background file icon, you need to change the type and creator information. Select "get info for Backgrounds" from the file menu and change the creator to MikL and be sure that the type is rsrc. Save your work and quit ResEdit.
Step 5) Put the Backgrounds file in the same folder as Munchies. When you start up again, the ppats should appear in the game. If you have used a lot of large (64 X 64) ppats, you will need to increase the memory alloted to Munchies by using the get info command in the Finder.
WARNING: ResEdit is a powerful programming tool that can open any file and generally wreak havok. It is recommended that you work on a copy of the file that you wish to alter. Normally, changing the resource numbers of files is not a good idea. Changing the numbers in a Desktop Textures file will still allow it to be used as a Desktop Textures file, but if you have changed the creator code, you will have to open it with the Desktop Textures application.
